Congrats on picking a quit day! I am now on my 10th day and feeling shaky but good! this is the longest I have ever gone in 35 yrs of smoking. I am using the patch and gum when needed! My sense of smell is starting to return and have kept busy after work by cleaning everything in sight lol I find I also hardly cough which is great cause the humidity usually akes a toll on my breathing. I think I picked a good time of year to quit! I am getting more hopeful and stronger every day!Tomorrow is day 11 already! You can do this!, Glaze My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/28/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 10 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 323 Amount Saved: $80 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 6 Mins: 3 Seconds: 17

Hi there, I sent this to someone else but hope that it might help you too to understand why you're feeling panicked. It's totally normal. It's not easy when family are pressuring you - you do need to do this for yourself but if you understand this addiction you will almost certainly want to. You'll need to do it in your own time though so ask them to give you some space while you research what this chemical is doing that makes you want to smoke it. The most powerful tool I found in the early days was understanding that the only way out of the mess you're in is to stop putting nicotine into your body. IT IS THE ONLY HOPE. The reason you're frightened is because when you go into withdrawal it takes time for your body to produce dopamine (makes us feel content and happy) in the quantities needed to feel "normal". A cigarette has been doing this for you and in fact nicotine has caused the problem in the first place. Nicotine causes a flood of dopamine so over time your brain has reduced the number of receptors to balance the situation out (like it's designed to). Now when you remove the nicotine, there is less dopamine and few receptors left so you feel depressed and out of sorts. It takes about 10-15 days for your brain to re-wire itself so you have to hang in there. It's a scientific fact that you'll come out of this but the only way is to not put any more of the drug in your body and to not build smoking up into some sort of god over which you have no control. Smoking is simply a delivery device for nicotine. It's not a habit it's an addiction. We don't enjoy smoking we think we do because it delivers the necessary chemical which loads our brain with feel good dopamine. It's a vicious circle because the more we smoke the fewer receptors so we smoke more to get the lovely ahhh i feel normal thing going. We feel relaxed when we smoke because technically before that we were in the early stages of withdrawal. Non-smokers don't feel that way ever. they feel like we do when we're having a smoke ALL the time! Wouldn't that be great - to feel that way without having to put cancer causing chemicals in your body and waste money? It's available to all of us...all we have to do is put up with a relatively short time (in the context of our lives) of

smokeis gone if you are afraid of failure, just don't tell anyone. I have been working up to this for over a year and I did not tell anyone about the quit until about 4 days into it.. I still can not beleive that "I am a NON SMOKER"!!! My dearest friend is a dr. and she has talked to me for over a year about not smoking. I have tried so many different ways to stop over the past 12 months. This is it and this support group has been great. Good Luck YOU can do it when you decide!! If I can anybody can. mon My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/22/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 16 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 338 Amount Saved: $48 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 17 Mins: 47 Seconds: 54

Hi smokeisgone, Welcome to the best 'quit smoking' support site there is. When you are ready, we are here. Why don't you check out the 'Quit Program Tools' to the left of your screen? You tell us if you are ready to quit or not. We will be here to support you whether you set your quit date for tomorrow or for next week. There is nothing wrong with preparing for your quit. You do however need to WANT to quit for yourself. When you realize that it isn't you that enjoys smoking, that it is your addiction to a drug called nicotine that makes you believe the lie that you enjoy smoking ... you will probably be more apt to quit. Open your eyes to the truth. Smoking smells. It will kill you. Did you know if you have cancer and they are trying to treat your cancer with radiation and chemo ... did you know that nicotine will actually surround the cancer cell and try to protect it to make sure you die basically. I can't believe I ever smoked. And have you ever wished to do something, but thought I don't have the time or the money? Was that something you wished for something healthy? Did you realize that something unhealthy ... an addiction ... was keeping you from doing things that were good in life? Addiction loves to keep the junkie down, blind and in denial. Stick with your decision to quit. If you need more time to prepare ... take a few days. Arm yourself. If you think you are ready now ... then do it. The sooner the better I'd say. Smoke is gone The hardest part of quitting is getting started. We have all been through the New Years Eve's where we quit for 30 minutes, the tomorrow I will stop, the Next week, next month... You are not alone. The anxiety the night before can be overwhelming. Take some deep breaths. Smoke the last of your cigarettes and tell them goodbye. When you quit, do it for five minutes at a time. You can do that for 5 minutes right? Sure you can. Don't look at your quit in terms of forever. Just five manageable minutes at a time. One step at a time. N.O.P.E. is how we all quit. Not One Puff Ever. You can do it. Congratulations on your decision to quit and stick close to the site for the first couple of weeks. The people here will help you get through it. You CAN do it! Take a deep breath, relax and take one day at a time. You eed to examine your reasons for quitting my friend. What I read didn't make me feel real good. You're feeling pressured into this by friends and family? You need to look at that and decide what's going on in your head. Good luck - don't listen to the Junkie, try to listen to reality and reason.
